How to Play Gin Rummy

Match Objective

The overall objective is to be the first player to reach 100 or more points across multiple rounds of play.

Round Objective

Improve your hand by forming your cards into "melds" to reduce your "deadwood" (unmatched cards). Your goal is to have fewer deadwood points than your opponent when a player knocks.

Game Play

  • Each player receives 10 cards.
  • Draw: Start your turn by drawing one card from the face-down deck or the face-up discard pile.
  • Melding: Form Sets (3-4 cards of the same rank) or Runs (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit).
  • Discard: End your turn by clicking a card in your hand to discard it.
  • Knocking: Click "Knock / Call Gin" when your remaining unmatched deadwood points total 10 or less. You must then select one card to discard to complete the knock.

Score Tallying

  • Card Values: Aces = 1 point. Face cards (J, Q, K) = 10 points. Number cards = Face value.
  • Standard Knock: If you knock with 1-10 deadwood points, your opponent is allowed to "lay off" their unmatched cards onto your formed melds.
  • Winning the Round: After layoffs, deadwood is compared. The player with the lower deadwood scores the difference between the two totals.
  • Going Gin: If you knock with 0 deadwood points, your opponent is not allowed to lay off cards. You score their total deadwood plus a 25-point Gin Bonus.
  • Undercut: If you knock with 1-10 points, and your opponent's deadwood ends up equal to or lower than yours, they have "undercut" you. They score the difference in points plus a 25-point Undercut Bonus.
